Take a look with us at the history of De Lichttoren in Eindhoven, where yesterday's timeline reflects today's essence. Discover how this iconic building has shaped itself over the years into a timeless symbol of past and modernity.

HISTORY OF THE PROPERTY
De Lichttoren was built in 1921. When Philips expanded further in the 1920s and added the very striking tower to the building, it became the icon of the company. The photo shows de Lichttoren with café Tramhalt in the foreground in 1923.
THE LIGHT BULB FACTORY
Until the 1960s, de Lichttoren functioned as Philips' light bulb factory. The building remained in use by Philips until the late 1990s. Then de Lichttoren was made suitable for apartments and commercial spaces. The photo gives a nice view of the cityscape in 1956.

DE NAAM ‘DE LICHTTOREN’
In the turret, endurance tests were done that tested the life expectancy of all the lamps Philips produced. In the old days, when Eindhoven still had mostly low-rise buildings, burning lamps could be seen far and wide. So there was always light burning. That's how the building got its name "de Lichttoren.
REDEVELOPMENT
After Philips left the building, de Lichttoren became vacant. In 2009, it was redeveloped and transformed into a vibrant place where living, working and relaxing come together. De Lichttoren has been "given back" to the city of Eindhoven.

GRAND CAFÉ DE LICHTTOREN
On the first floor, where there used to be a warehouse with a carpentry shop where crates and other packaging materials for the lamps were made, Grand Café de Lichttoren will now take up residence in 2023. Proud to be located in this iconic building!
